James Howard 1796-1897
3rd Great Grandfather
White slave owner and father of his slave son Henderson Howard and his siblings. James Howard was born on October 15, 1796, in Surry, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth McGowne and they had nine children together. He also had five sons and one daughter with the slave named Patty Anderson from the Lucy Anderson Plantation nearby. He died on April 19, 1897, on his farm in Lisbon, Union, Arkansas at the impressive age of 100, and was buried there at Howard Family cemetery with his white wife Elizabeth McGowne.

African Slave and Freedmen. Wife of James Howard, mother of Henderson Howard. When Patty Anderson was born in 1815 in Georgia, her final owner John, was 7, and his wife Lucy, was 7. Patty had five sons and one daughter with James Howard between 1846 and 1853. She married a man named Johnson, but he died and she was listed as a widow living with her son in 1880 in Van Buren, Arkansas, at the age of 65. We do not know where Patty is buried.

African Slave and Freedmen, sharecropper and Sweet Canaan Church trustee. African Slave of Alexander Barnes, Freedman and father of Charlotte Barnes Johnson Howard. Alexander Barnes was born in 1820 in Georgia. He had one son and four daughters with Hannah Barnes. He died in 1895 at the age of 75, and is buried in Sweet Canaan Cemetery in Lisbon, Union County, Arkansas. Alex was the first trustee of Sweet Canaan Church and was buried the year the cemetery was established in 1895.

Cherokee Slave wife of Alex Barnes and Freedmen wife of Samuel Johnson. Mother of Charlotte Barnes Johnson Howard. Hannah Barnes Johnson was born in 1828 in Kentucky. She had one son and three daughters with Alexander Barnes. She then married Samuel Johnson and they had two children together. She died after the 1900 Census was taken in Union County Arkansas, at least reaching the age of 72.

When Henderson Howard was born in 1851 in Union, Arkansas, his father, James, was 55 and his mother, Patty, was 36. He married Charlotte Lottie Barnes Howard and they had seven children together. He also had one daughter from another relationship. He died in 1896 in Union, Arkansas, at the age of 45, and is buried in Sweet Canaan Cemetery in Lisbon, Union County, Arkansas.

Former slave and Freedwoman, wife of Henderson Howard, Mother of Mary Howard Robinson and siblings. When Charlotte Lottie Barnes Howard was born a slave in 1853 in Arkansas, her father, Alexander the African slave, was 33, and her mother, Hannah the Black Cherokee slave, was 25. She married Henderson Howard, a mulatto Freedman in 1872 in Union, Arkansas. They had six children in 13 years. She died in 1936 in Kansas City, Kansas, at the age of 83, and was buried in Union, Arkansas.

Daughter of Henderson and Charlotte Howard, mother of James Robinson 1893-1986. When Mary Howard was born in 1876 in Union, Arkansas, their father, Henderson, was 25 and their mother, Charlotte, was 23. She married Frank Robinson on December 4, 1892, in her hometown. They had two children during their marriage, James Robinson and another child that died after birth. She died as a young mother in 1895 of Childbirth Fever in Union, Arkansas, at the age of 19, and was buried there at Sweet Canaan Cemetery next to her parents and Grandfather Alex Barnes.

Husband of Mary Howard, father of James Robinson, son of Fannie Loor, of Louisiana and white father from Missouri. When Frank Robinson was born on February 17, 1872, in Louisiana, his father, Mr. Robinson, was 21 and his mother, Fannie, was 32. He was married three times and had two sons and five daughters. Frank was a pioneer who homesteaded land in Union County Arkansas and was one of the early settlers in Oklahoma after it became a state in 1907. Frank was also a Baptist preacher and farmer. He died of influenza shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Flu pandemic, on March 5, 1917, in Rentiesville, Checotah, Oklahoma, at the age of 45. He is buried in Rentiesville Oklahoma.

Son of Frank and Mary Howard Robinson, husband of Estella Ortiz Gonzales Robinson, father of James Robert Robinson 1938-2001. When James Robinson was born on August 28, 1893, in Union, Arkansas, his father, Frank, was 21 and his mother, Mary, was 17. He married Myrtle (May) Ware-Robinson and they had one son together who died at birth. He then married Josepha Estella Ortiz and they had 15 children together. He died on November 19, 1986, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 93, and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Avondale, Arizona.

Wife of James Robinson, daughter of Mexican refugees Beatrix Gonzales and Pablo Ortiz, mother of James Robert Robinson 1938-2001. When Josepha Estella Ortiz was born on February 8, 1918, in El Paso, Texas, her father, Pablo, was 18, and her mother, Beatriz, was 15. She married James Robinson on April 2, 1938, in Kansas City, Kansas. They had 15 children in 22 years. She died on August 25, 1972, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 54, and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Avondale, Arizona.

He dedicated his career to serving poor underprivileged communities. He was an accomplished artist, musician, patented inventor, author and Mayan hieroglyphic research. He died on August 17, 2001, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 62, and at Holy Cross Cemetery in Avondale, Arizona.

She then married Michael Salvato and they had two son's together, Michael Joseph (1969-1978) and Vincent Ross Salvato (1971-Present). She died on November 18, 1978, in Kansas City at the age of 37.

Not only an exceptional business leader, Mr. Robinson is a disabled veteran and former Army officer who served in occupied Berlin and on the East German Front during the Cold War, and went on to lead elite Special Forces units on operations throughout Central and South America after earning the coveted Green Beret. He led strategic units conducting highly classified operations in Panama, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, Venezuela, and across Latin America. Prior to earning the Green Beret, Robinson served as a tactical nuclear firing officer in the Field Artillery.
After the Anthrax attacks in 2002, Mr. Robinson was asked to take a leave of absence from Industry to serve as a Program Manager to rapidly build a national infectious disease detection system to help protect the Nation against a pandemic or outbreak due to bioterrorism.
His leadership helped develop the National Retail Data Monitor that analyzed over the counter medicine sales for signs of infectious disease, so that public health officials could rapidly respond.
His efforts helped rally the trillion dollar Food & Drug industry to come to the support of the nation after the attacks of9/11/01. President Bush called the initiative the modern day Manhattan project.
In 2003, Mr. Robinson was asked to serve on the Expert Advisory Board for Middle Eastern Affairs, where he helped create strategic communications recommendations for U.S. Central Command in the war effort. The group was instrumental in providing strategic communications advice that helped quell anti-American sentiment in foreign media.
Mr. Robinson is a first generation college graduate and holds a Bachelor’s in Geography and Planning from Arizona State University, a Master’s in Business and Analytics from Webster University and post graduate studies from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
His leadership portfolio includes current or past service on Fifth Third Bank’s Community Advisory Forum, the committee of management for YMCA Teen Services, the Board of Directors for America’s Team youth development initiative, the Board of Directors for the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s, the Board of Directors for LULAC, the Board of Directors for the Army Special Forces Association, and currently serves on the advisory committee for the Institute for Social Media and the Board of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. Michael Upchurch I 1620-1681
9th Great Grandfather
At the time of his arrival to the Virginia Colony in 1638, the white population in the American colonies was 48,768 excluding about 1,600 Negros. Michael was an indentured servant who worked seven years as a tobacco farmer until earning his freedom and 50 acres of land. He sent four letters back to England to describe living in the New World. When Michael Upchurch was born on May 11, 1620, his father, Richard, was 35 and his mother, Frances, was 35. He married Frances in 1651 in Surry, Virginia. They had seven children in 11 years. He died on July 5, 1681, in Surry, Virginia, at the age of 61, and was buried there.

When Michael III Upchurch was born in 1727 in Surry, Virginia, his father, James, was 42 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 37. He had nine sons and two daughters with Frances Upchurch between 1736 and 1775. He died in 1795 in Brunswick, Virginia, at the age of 68, and was buried there. L.D. Bockstruck 1988, Virginia Colonial Soldiers. Michael Upchurch listed among soldiers from Brunswick County in schedule attached to an act passed 14 September 1758. for the defense of the Virginia colony. He fought with the 11th Virginia under Daniel Morgan and George Washington's Battlefield command at the Battle of Monmouth
George Upchurch 1757-1831

When George Upchurch was born in 1757 in Brunswick, Virginia, his father, Michael, was 29 and his mother, Frances, was 26. He married Rachel Bethshares in 1780 in his hometown. They had seven children in 18 years. He was part of the Great Western Expansion and he was a pioneer who settled in the Cumberland Gap in Wayne County Kentucky, and died there in 1831 at the age of 74.

Nancy Mason Upchurch was born on April 20, 1816, in North Carolina. She married Silas Upchurch in 1833 in Wayne, Kentucky. They had 14 children in 31 years. She died in 1863 in Wayne, Kentucky, at the age of 47. She testified in the Civil War Crime trial of Confederate Guerilla Champ Ferguson, who was one of two people executed for war crimes during the Civil War.

She had one son with William A. Stevens. She then married William Alexander STEVENS and they had nine children together. She died on October 2, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 81, and was buried in Kansas City, Missouri.

Clyde A Stevens was born on June 4, 1916, in Elmira, Missouri. His parents were William Stevens and Eliza Wayne Upchurch. He married Naomi Hawthorne Crump and they had one daughter together, Cynthia Alberta. He was a B24 Bomber pilot in WW2 stationed in Italy, completing 50 combat missions. After the war he married Virginia Lee Stevens and they had four children together. He died on May 26, 1952, at the age of 35 from service connected disabilities, and was buried in Boise, Idaho.
